Open thread: Do you think the shark sighting in Southampton was actually a shark?

Four Southampton beaches were briefly closed

Southampton has been having a Shark Week of its own—on Monday, August 14, four Southampton Town ocean beaches were closed by the Southampton Town Parks Department after a shark sighting, reports 27east. The beaches were reopened on Tuesday.

The chief lifeguard said that he could not confirm that they were sharks, and that they might have been “large fish” about six or seven feet in size. Another resident said they might have been dolphins.

Watch the video below and let us know what you think.

Although sharks have been spotted on the East End before—and they’re often seen off the coast of Montauk—seeing one that close to shore in Southampton is rare.

We’re still waiting for confirmation on the sighting, but we want to know: Do you think that they’re sharks? Or are you more skeptical, thinking that it’s more likely to be a dolphin or large fish? Were you at the beach when it happened? Let us know in the comments.
