Is Westhampton a Hampton?

Editor’s Note: This post was originally published in June 2011 and has been updated with the most recent information.

It's as much a philosophical question as a geographical one: Where does the Hamptons begin?

The phrase "the Hamptons" was first used as a marketing term in the 1879 Handbook of Summer Travel, a promotional pamphlet for the then-newly extended Long Island Railroad, but it was never entirely clear exactly which towns were meant to be included.

Is Westhampton in or out? Is it everything east of the Shinnecock canal? What about Shelter Island? Hampton Bays was called “Good Ground” up until 1922 and it only changed its name in order to attract the growing tourism of surrounding towns. Does it count as part of the Hamptons?
