Sunset Hill, the estate at 22 Prospect Avenue in Shelter Island Heights, has been put on the market for $8,875,000.
The home was originally owned by Dr. Richard Salter Storrs, a minister who famously delivered a speech for Abraham Lincoln in 1865, and a prayer for the Brooklyn Bridge opening ceremony in 1883—the same year that the estate was built.
The Queen Anne style home was restored in 2009, which included a new foundation poured and cleaning of the original floors, staircase, and mantelpieces. It sits just under 7,200-square-feet on a lot that’s just under two acres in size.
The structure features seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a gym, home theatre, and even a workshop. Many of the original details of the home have been meticulously maintained, such as the wood flooring.
The listing puts a focus on the entry foyer with its fireplace and cushioned window seat. But there are some key details to point out regarding the master suite, as well. From the looks of it, theres a large sitting area with a fireplace, and then off to the side there is a nook for the bed.
A typical layout in a master bedroom allows for the bed to be right in the middle, however due to the placement of the fireplace, that wouldn’t be ideal for this master bedroom. While the layout of the room itself is a bit odd at first glance, the result is interesting. And the bed nook is actually pretty cool.
On the exterior, one will enjoy a heated gunite pool, patio, and garden path—not to mention the incredible water views from every room of the house. Given its location, the future homeowner of this estate will also enjoy access to private beaches.
Sunset Hill was also the summer home for Governor Hugh L. Carey.
