Fashion Designer Arnold Scaasi’s Non-Minimalist Quogue Home

Colorful and daring

Designer Arnold Scaasi once declared, "I am definitely not a minimalist!" Mr. Scaasi, who dressed first ladies (Barbara Bush, Mamie Eisenhower, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush), socialites (Gayfryd Steinberg and Nan Kempner) and Hollywood stars (Barbra Streisand, Joan Crawford, Joan Rivers, Elizabeth Taylor, Diahann Carroll, Mary Tyler Moore, Sophia Loren, and Natalie Wood) died last year at the age of 85. Now his beloved Quogue estate is on the market--and you can see a fashion designer's daring, exuberant taste in the decoration. That blue wallpaper with the papier-mache salon suite? With some Thonet bentwood chairs and a brass-topped table? Wow.

With 1.7 acres and 472 feet of bulkheading right on the bay, the property offers views to Dune Road and the ocean. The house itself is a gracious old 1920 edifice with 4000 square feet of space and seven bedrooms and 6.5 baths. However, the listing notes that "the home's bones are solid and the architectural detailing exquisite (in fact, it was featured in Architectural Digest twice), the 1920 3-story structure needs a major renovation to restore it back to its former glory" or it can be replaced with a 6000 square foot new house. The asking price of $4.95M reflects that work is needed.
