For months now, opposition to the Gateway at Bridgehampton project has been growing. The mixed-use project was going to include 85,000 square feet of retail and 24 housing units, including 20 affordable units as a community benefit. Developers Carol and Greg Konner offered community green space for residents, as well as a state-of-the-art sewage system costing more than $1.5 million. The project would have required approval as a Southampton Planned Development District.
Well, scratch that. Carol Konner is no longer interested in pursuing the project. Quoted in the Southampton Press, Ms. Konner said, "I am withdrawing my support for the town’s initiative after three and a half years as it relates to the PDD." Instead, she will develop the 13 acres she owns under its current highway business zoning. So in addition to the Equinox gym long planned for the site, it could become home to a Best Buy, a McDonald's, Marshall's, the long-rumored CVS.
