Tennis Great John McEnroe Lists Southampton House for $14.5M

Play on McEnroe's own court

You're leaving the Hamptons, John? You cannot be serious!

John McEnroe's Squabble Lane house, which he shares with wife Patty Smyth (singer for Scandal), is famously the only one of his homes to have a tennis court. Of course, this being the Hamptons, there's also a gunite pool, and there's also highly coveted beach access. As for the house itself, it seems nice enough, although weirdly (for privacy? because they're dated?) there are no pictures of living areas or the kitchen, just a lot of bedroom and bathroom shots. The listing notes, "a sun-drenched living room with vaulted ceiling, to formal and casual dining spaces, a library, office, den and splendid sunroom." We'll take your word for it. In all, there are 8 bedrooms and 7.5 baths in 7500 square feet of space on 2.17 acres of land.

Squabble Lane is an excellent address and is part of the former McDonnell-Murray compound, 300 acres that used to belong to a famous Southampton family. The listing says the property used to belong to "Standard Oil baron Henry Rogers," but we think that's a mistake: Black Point, the Rogers estate, was to the west, by Old Town Pond. $14.5M is probably a fair price for the area and the size of the property.
