We decided to see what was out there for the least money, our criteria being east of the canal and a freestanding home (no mobile homes, condos, or co-ops). Well, this is the winner: 128 Queens Lane, East Hampton. It's $329,000, 600sf, two bedrooms, one bathroom, built in 1965, with a two-car garage and "room for a pool." The plot is a decent size, 0.28 acre, and there's a new roof, hardwood floors, and an acceptable-looking bathroom. Add some decent landscaping, a new kitchen and that pool and enjoy your bargain, we say.
