Monastic Minimalism in Montauk by John Pawson

This newly completed house on Old Montauk Highway is by British architect John Pawson. The heavy walls frame views of the Atlantic, and the plain interiors and simple wood floors let the setting speak for itself, while horizontal lines echo the ocean horizon and the space flows easily through minimal partitions. The stucco walls match the sandy beach, while the silvery decks reference driftwood. It all seems a bit heavy to us, and we would prefer thinner walls with wider ocean views, but the simplicity is very soothing.
