Residents, Environmentalists Complain About the Hills at Southampton

At a hearing Tuesday night regarding the Hills at Southampton project, some local residents and environmentalists strongly opposed the development, planned for East Quogue. Discovery Land Company, the developers, are seeking to build 118 homes and an 18-hole golf course on about 500 acres of undeveloped land. The residences would be restricted by covenant to be second homes.

The project would require special zoning, a special mixed-use planned development district. Most of the land already purchased by Discovery would allow 82 homes by right; the concern is that the project, in an environmentally sensitive area, would negatively affect area groundwater. A number of environmentalists said they were prefer that the current five-acre zoning be kept for the area, while others said that the proposed benefits of the development, which much be provided for a PDD to be approved, are really mitigation, not benefits. Still, others believe that the economic benefits of the development outweigh any possible environmental impact.

Want to speak out? The next hearing is at 6PM on Monday, May 18, at East Quogue Elementary School.
