Curbed Cup 1st Round: (1) Montauk vs. (16) Westhampton

New, 10 comments

The Curbed Cup, our annual award to the Hamptons neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 towns/villages/hamlets vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have two matchups per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends 24 hours after it begins. Please remember—no wagering.

The Curbed Cup officially kicks off today, and we're starting by pairing the top and bottom seeded towns against one another: welcome Montauk (1) and newbie Westhampton/WHB (16) to the Cup!

Montauk is our number one seed this year, having won the Cup the past two years. The End is hoping for a threepeat this year, and why not? Despite issues with overcrowding and rowdy drunks, Montauk is still the place to see and been seen in the summer. The only constant in Montauk these days is change. In the past year, a number of new restaurants have opened or changed hands, including local institutions like the Shagwong and Trail's End; hotels and resorts, too, have been sold and refurbished, including the Panoramic View, while Sole East is rumored to be almost in contract.

Westhampton and Westhampton Beach are new to the Cup, but strong contenders. There's a thriving arts scene in Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, and the new Hamptons Business District at the airport, which includes a new Tate's. Westhampton is of course known for beautiful beaches, especially Cupsogue, and boasts some great restaurants as well such as The Patio. Plus? No traffic nightmares.
