The Montauk Salt Cave Brings Halotherapy to the East End

New, 5 comments

Interested in a natural way to ease symptoms related to respiratory disease, skin conditions and inflammatory problems? Proponents of halotherapy, a form of alternative medicine, say that salt can do all that and more. The new Montauk Salt Cave is the first halotherapy room in our area. Intrigued, we talked with owner Shannon Coppola to find out more.

What exactly is a salt cave?
A salt cave is a room built with about three tons of Himalayan salt rocks from either Pakistan or Nepal. The salt is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial-therefore healing for all. The room literally looks like a cave with faux stalactites and a starry sky. Each inch of the walls is built with salt and the floor is covered with salt. It's quite beautiful.

What conditions do salt rooms help?
Salt therapy is a remedy for all respiratory ailments, such as COPD, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, asthma, allergies, the common cold and the flu. The salt is also beneficial for people who suffer from skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne). The salt helps alleviate migraines and headaches. The salt helps with arthritis, symptoms from Lyme disease, neuropathy, stress, depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. Sinus issues, digestive disorders. And if there is nothing "wrong" with you it is a great place to sit back, meditate and relax. One 45 minute cave session is equivalent to a week at the beach. It just rejuvenates your soul. Himalayan salt also reduces blood pressure.

What is a session like? How will we feel afterwards?
A session is quite magical. You simply sit in a zero gravity chair and breathe for 45 minutes. There is soothing music playing you fade into a place of tranquility. You will feel wonderful after 45 minutes. You will breathe easy and feel relaxed.

We opened in Montauk because salt therapy was the only thing that seemed to help our son. He suffered from many respiratory ailments since infancy and we couldn't seem to get his cough under control. We treated him for asthma. We treated him for allergies. We treated him for acid reflux. We had his adenoid removed. Nothing seemed to work. We took him to a salt room in Clifton, New Jersey and after one session he slept through the night for the first time in 4.5 years and his cough disappeared. We live in Montauk and truly wanted to help others. We are seeing some incredible results. One woman has not had to take her asthma inhaler in three weeks—something she was dependent upon for 35 years. It truly is amazing!

We have a children's hour during the week at 4:00PM. Because small children cannot sit for 45 minutes, they can come and play in the salt. We have buckets and shovels and they don't even realize that the "treatment' is going on. They think it is a cool playdate in a cave.
