June 9 is the opening of Shelter Island's newest eatery, Katana Restaurant and Bar, which will feature Thai and Indonesian specialties along with a sushi bar serving sustainable fish. Located within La Maison Blanche Hotel, Katana will feature a menu with small plates like steamed mussels and vegetable spring rolls, along with dishes like pan-seared yellow fin tuna, shrimp and vegetable stir-fry, and Penang chicken green curry.
Sustainability is important to restaurateur and executive chef Alexander Lehnen. He says, "Working with Monterey Aquarium's sustainable seafood watch list, we will be offering fish that is not only fresh, but in abundance. It's important to be sensitive to the environment and remain socially responsible." His Chef de Cuisine is Kiki Abdat, who hails from Jakarta.
The bar hasn't been forgotten, either. Specialty cocktails include Thai Basil Smash (Grey Goose vodka, cucumber juice, basil, lime), Hanoi Highball (Bombay Sapphire Gin, watermelon juice, mint, lemon) and East Meets West (Milagro tequila, jalapeno, cilantro syrup, Cointreau, lime).
