Consider a Design-Builder for Your Dream Home

New, 19 comments

If a custom house is a tailored suit, then spec houses are off the rack. A spec home is someone else's idea of what you want as a buyer. Special features that you've dreamed of might need to be added, or you may also be paying for features you simply don't want. All decisions have been made for you already, and changes may be costly.

You get exactly what you want when you build your own custom house, but you may not have realized that you can save money that way as well. A design-builder can design a flexible home that takes into account your wants and needs now, but also the changing needs of you and your family into the future. Combining the roles of site planner, architect, builder and landscape architect, the design-builder streamlines the entire process.

Luxury home builder Jeffrey Collé has launched a new design-build initiative on the East End with the support of Sotheby's International Realty for a turnkey custom solution. Buyers of land through Sotheby's are then referred to Collé to create a custom home. At an average cost of $600 per square foot, including builder and architectural fees, Collé's pricing is competitive for high-end residential construction. From concept to completion, the process takes an average of 15 months.

"Engaging an experienced design-builder can save the buyer 40-to-60 percent over the price of an equivalent spec home," says Collé. "Moreover, the buyers are getting exactly what they want with a custom build. At the end of the process, they step into their dream, not someone else's."
