Philip Johnson's Farney House to Be Demolished?

New, 3 comments

It's not been a good year for iconic architect Philip Johnson in the Hamptons. First, the owner of the Gin Lane house with a Johnson addition applied to demolish it, and now the new owners of the Farney House in Sagaponack want to knock it down. The historic and important house was designed by Johnson in 1946, before his famous Glass House. It spent several years on the market before being purchased last year by hedge funder Zachary Schreiber and wife Lori. They want to replace the modern structure with a new house to be designed by Robert A.M. Stern, the father of postmodernism. Doesn't this all seem a little ironic on many levels? Especially since the glass box house is considered the ne plus ultra of good taste globally. Stay tuned.
