Curbed Cup 2nd Round: Amagansett vs. Montauk

New, 1 comment

The Curbed Cup, our annual award to the Hamptons neighborhood of the year, has whittled the eight towns/villages/hamlets vying for the prestigious fake trophy down to four. This week will decide which of those remaining areas move onto to the final round for a shot at Curbed Cup glory. Voting for each pairing ends 24 hours after it begins. Let the eliminations commence! Please remember—no wagering.

Can 2012 Curbed Cup champ Amagansett stop Montauk, 2013's winner, from a repeat? The real estate market continues to be hot, hot, hot, in the Lanes and the Dunes. The area saw many teardowns; often by Farrell Building Company putting up large new residences. And 2014 saw plenty of celebrity action in Amagansett, including the Clintons, who chose the Bell Estate in Amagansett for their annual vacation; Scarlett Johansson, who has been seen around town near her new AMG house; and of course the consciously uncoupled Martin-Paltrows.

Montauk hopes to stop Amagansett in its tracks. The big news in the town was the debate over how to shore up the downtown beaches, and the answer is apparently sand tubes, but the work may not be completed by Memorial Day. The other big story in the town was the plans for redevelopment of the East Deck motel, which sold last year. It may be purchased by East Hampton using CPF funds.
