Did You Know You Can Challenge Your Property Tax Assessment?

New, 4 comments

A reader writes,

Over the past few years the Town of Southampton has assessed my Bridgehampton property at a certain number. On tax grievance day, my challenge was rejected, but I then took taken the challenge to the Supreme Court of New York. Then my assessment (and property tax) was reduced significantly (25% two years ago, 19% on January 7, 2014). As happened two years ago, I am confident that once the new tax year starts they will put my assessment back to where it was and I will again hire a representative (who takes 50% of the first year's savings as a fee) and go through the process once more. I am sure others don't even realize they can make a challenge to begin with. Thanks for the tip!
