The state DEC and the Army Corps of Engineers have approved a massive reconstruction of Southampton beaches between Water Mill and the East Hampton border that will begin right after Labor Day. Dredgers will obtain sand a mile offshore and pump it onto the beaches. The project will save money by starting early, since in most places dredgers are not used until later in the autumn in order to protect endangered species like sea turtles and migrating sturgeon. But in this case, the dredgers will be fitted with special devices to avoid harming sea life like the endangered Ridley sea turtle pictured here.
