Southampton Discusses Safety Mandates and Landlord Burdens

[Southampton rental with a pool/Saunders]
Southampton Town Board members this week discussed rental permit inspections and state safety mandates. Prospective landlords must have their homes visited by the town's building inspector, and all state safety codes must be met before a permit will be granted. However, upgraded state safety codes often require homeowners to perform expensive renovations and modifications. For example, in recent years the state has tightened the requirements for swimming pool enclosures. The town's building inspector says, "Probably 75 to 80 percent of the pools in the Town of Southampton don't comply. Sometimes it isn't an easy fix, especially if the fence isn't in compliance—they may need a new fence."
