Town officials in East Hampton want to raise fines for violations like beach driving without a permit, but one resident complained that the time limits are too short. According to Newsday, David Buda of Springs said, "This is a late fee that is so onerous that you double the fine if they do not respond in 15 days. If you lose a ticket, it triples after 30 days. . . . It's $800 for driving with no permit on the beach. Is this the message we want to give to visitors from afar?" (We say: do visitors from afar think they can drive on the beach with no permit? Really?) The board decided not to vote on the plan for raising fees just yet.
