Water quality in Lake Montauk around South Lake Beach, a popular spot for little kids, is showing a lot of fecal contamination, particularly after storms. Eeeew. The Lake Montauk Technical Watershed Advisory Committee advised the East Hampton Town Board to change the sign at the beach to "all water contact in this area should be avoided." Where does the fecal matter come from? Stormwater runoff. Of course, town officials are bickering as usual about what should be done. Some don't want to change the current sign; some suggest that people rinse the shit-water off after they swim there; others suggest just banning people from the beach.
