Southampton Village Officials Want to Say Just One Word: Jetties

New, 10 comments

The Southampton Village Board toured the coastline of Westhampton Beach last week, and they were impressed with how well the jetties protected the shore during Superstorm Sandy. "'Is that something we should be looking at?' Mayor Mark Epley said this week. 'Based on what I saw, I would not be opposed to a series of groins being built, and a program that backfills them with sand, the way they have there.'" Building long swathes of jetties along the shore was popular during the first half of the twentieth century, but basically abandoned since the 1970s. Southampton Village officials hold out little hope they'll be allowed to build jetties, though.
