Army Corps Studying Ways to Protect Downtown Montauk

New, 1 comment

Engineers are assessing methods of bolstering Montauk's low-lying downtown after Superstorm Sandy decimated the dunes that protected it. Rep. Tim Bishop expects the Corps to eventually implement a major coastal amelioration project. Several features of the Montauk coastline make protecting the downtown challenging: the shape makes a wide sandy beach (hundreds of feet) impossible, and the lenses of sand that feed the coastline of Long Island are farther offshore at Montauk than anywhere else.
