Montauk's Royal Atlantic Beach Resort is shoring up the Sandy-ravaged coastline in front of the hotel in rather unusual way—lining up septic tanks. Not so fast, says the state Department of Environmental Conservation. While motels are permitted to shore up their land, using concrete septic tank rings to build up the dunes is not allowed. But according to town officials and motel owners, they've gotta do something fast before the fast-approaching summer season. "The beaches in downtown Montauk lost about 75 yards of sand eroded by the two autumn storms, said East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson. "That used to be a 100-yard deep beach and what you saw is now about 25 yards deep," he said. "The beach lowered by about two feet, the actual profile of that stretch." [Newsday]
