New Units Planned to Replace Westhampton "Eyesore"

The owner of a property that formerly housed a nightclub along Montauk Highway in Westhampton is seeking a variance to build 14 apartments in its place. The property is currently zoned neither for a nightclub nor for apartments. Lawrence Citarelli Jr., president of the building firm Lawrence III Corporation, appeared before the Southampton Town Zoning Board of Appeals on February 7 presenting plans for the construction of three two-story structures on the 1.7-acre parcel.

"Quite frankly, Mr. Citarelli would be a hero to the neighborhood by demolishing those structures and revamping the property with the newly proposed housing units," wrote two neighbors to the zoning board.

"I don't have a cape, but maybe I should," Mr. Citarelli quipped to Curbed. "It's about taking a neighborhood eyesore and making it into something attractive and useful for the community."

Plans include three new buildings with ten one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units totaling 12,800 square feet. The units will be either townhouses for sale or rental apartments, ranging in size from 800 to about 1500 square feet each. The board is expected to hear the application again in March, after which it will issue a decision.
