The Curbed Cup, our annual award to the Hamptons neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 8 towns/villages/hamlets vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have one matchup per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends 24 hours after it begins. Please remember—no wagering.
Hoping to wrestle the title away from Amagansett is the 11976, otherwise known as Water Mill. Lots of celebrity action there this year. J-Lo finally bought a little place in the town, and promptly discovered a stalker living in her pool house. Hugh Jackman toured houses in the town and according to our spies, actually bought one. Alicia Keys and husband Swizz Beatz hung out in the wrong Water Mill summer house one night, and Sun Capital honcho Marc Leder annoyed the neighbors with his partying. Finally, Villa Maria was put back on the market for a mere $49.5 million, looking all spruced up.
Amagansett is hoping for a repeat of their 2012 Curbed Cup victory. Biggest news in the burg was the brouhaha over 555: developers planned to turn the 20+ acres of former Ocean View Farm into a senior complex, but at this juncture, those plans look unlikely to come to fruition. Some vintage Scheffer cottages were put up for sale, a new farm offered a CSA, and East Hampton attempted to rein in the drunken revelry at Indian Wells Beach.
