East Hampton Village was presented with a deer management plan by the Long Island Farm Bureau and the United States Department of Agriculture last week. The local deer population has exploded, and according to officials, the result is increased Lyme disease in humans, car accidents, and loss of farm crops. The plan includes culling of deer by sharpshooters and sterilization. Local wildlife lovers objected. Bill Crain of the East Hampton Group for Wildlife, quoted in the East Hampton Star, stated that research "indicates probably no correlation between deer and Lyme. The main culprit is the white-footed mouse. Ticks will find other hosts. . . . If we get into panic mode, it will divert us from doing realistic things." The village board will deliberate about the plan.
