Yesterday, East Hampton Town Councilman Dominick Stanzione mooted an idea to use Community Preservation Fund monies to nourish Ditch Plains in Montauk with sand. A new CPF law permits towns to use these funds to purchase beachfront properties to protect them from storms and rises in sea level. Whether this could apply to using this money to protect a beach already owned by a town, such as Ditch Plains, is questionable, though. The Peconic Bay Region Community Preservation Fund Advisory Opinions Bureau, which includes representatives from each East End town and legal counsel, will offer its opinion on the idea.
