Plum Island-wire

New, 5 comments

Plum Island, which sits right off the tip of the North Fork and is home to everyone's favorite animal disease laboratory, is currently in the process of turning over to civilian control (the federally-run labs are moving to Kansas). In anticipation of more visitors coming to the island soon, the Department of Homeland Security (which currently runs the island) is seeking $1.5M in federal funds to restore the island's historic lighthouse and remove asbestos from the interior. Will they get the money? "It's reasonably affordable," so they're "very optimistic." [Previously, Newsday]
