Southampton Will Live Under Waldbaum's Tyranny Forever

New, 28 comments

Although Southampton residents (or their domestic help) hoped they might have a new supermarket option in the village soon, officials dashed those dreams at a meeting yesterday and now a pall of despair has settled all over the land. Currently, the only grocery store option is the Waldbaum's on Jagger Lane and everyone calls this "inadequate." There used to be a Gristedes and an IGA, but alas. These are no more.

To address this grocery store shortage, the Village was considering changing the zoning on a small stretch of the highway to allow for a supermarket at the corner of Hampton and Flying Point roads. But concerns about whether widening the highway there would make traffic worse and what's happening with a proposed new King Kullen hypermarket up the street spooked the board members and now the whole thing is on hold. The Village promises to study the issue further, but it's unlikely Waldbaum's is going to loosen it's iron grip anytime soon.
