According to the Shelter Island Reporter, a would-be thief knocked out much of Shelter Island's phone service last week. While attempting to steal copper wiring, the clueless criminal "severed [a] phone cord that runs from Greenport to Shelter Island." While Verizon employees worked "around the clock" for three or four days to repair the cord, Shelter Island's supervisor called the delay "unacceptable" and recommended the town consider a second phone provider to make sure a lapse in service can't happen again.
