In our continuing efforts to help make a little sense of the jargon you might encounter on the South Fork, here now is our second installment of the Hamptons Glossary. Got something to add? Shoot an Email to Hamptons@Curbed.com.
Lily Pond Lane: Arguably the most expensive street in East Hampton. Houses along the south side of Lily Pond are often oceanfront or come with private beach access. You can find Grey Gardens here (where it meets West End Road). Famous residents: Martha Stewart, Bon Jovi
Piping Plover: In 2007, a pair of these endangered birds were found nesting on Main Beach. So what's the big deal? Well, due to the Endangered Species Act, East Hampton was forced to move its annual 4th of July Fireworks display to Labor Day weekend?giving the shorebirds time to hatch their eggs. As one might expect, this hasn't made them very popular. A bumper sticker that reads "Piping Plover Tastes Like Chicken" can be found affixed to the back of many trucks in the area.
The Season: Memorial Day weekend through Labor day is considered the "Summer Season", although July and August are the really busy months ?the kids are out of school and the weather (as well as the ocean) heats up.
Sharehouse: A summer rental that is split by a group of people. Can range anywhere from 2 people sharing the house throughout the season up to 10 – 20 who schedule what weekends they can use the place.
Teardown: The term given to a house that's only worth buying for the land it sits upon. If Curbed readers are to believed, half of all homes in the Hamptons fall into this category.
Trade Train/Parade: Because so many people out here are having work done on their homes, Monday through Friday (and sometimes on the weekends) around 8am to 9am and 5pm to 6pm, there will be a line of work trucks heading either out east of back west. Best to avoid Route 27 at this time if you can.
Tumbleweed Tuesday: The Tuesday after Labor Day. The joke is that the towns are so empty you can see tumbleweeds rolling along their Main Streets.
