"At this point, gentlemen, we are going to have to proceed to trial." ? East Hampton Town Justice Catherine A. Cahill
Everyone was ready for a slap on the wrist and a reduced fine, but it looks like the folks behind Surf Lodge?and their lawyer, Colin Patrick Astarita?pressed their luck one too many times. The East Hampton Star is reporting that following a "heated exchange in the courtroom" Justice Cahill ordered the attorney to return next Monday with clients in tow. They're probably kicking themselves for not taking that $100K settlement East Hampton offered back in October.
However, the biggest news to come out of Monday's little courtroom drama is this (from the article):
"At one point Justice Cahill said, 'Counsel made the court aware, as well as the town, that his clients will be divesting themselves of their shares,' a point which Mr. Astarita objected to, causing Justice Cahill to respond, 'What counsel said was your clients wished to divest, your words.'"Perhaps the rumor that Puffy might be headed to Montauk this summer is true after all.
