We had a special request from a reader yesterday asking us to feature a property that we really, really love. So, for this week's installment of From Curbed Marketplace, we're doing just that. This particular residence has graced the pages of Curbed Hamptons before, but we thought it was worth revisiting for those who may have missed it the first time around.
Designed by Will Sharp for longtime friends Lon Hamaekers (a modernist furniture dealer) and his partner, Douglas Allen, the brokerbabble describes this custom home as "modern living at its best." However, when the couple first bought the property, they were unsure of what to do with the pre-existing chalet-style house that resided on the half acre parcel. Instead of tearing the place down, the architect recommended they keep the roofline, some of the foundation and chimney. After much collaboration, everything else underwent a rather dramatic renovation.
But unlike much of the construction 'round these parts, they made sure not to overdo it. According to Hamaekers: "We made the decision to build in scale to the lives we wanted to live, and in scale to the neighborhood. We didn't want to build more than we'd use and waste the world's energy."
The final product is this 3,000 sq. ft. (roughly double the original home's size) four-bedroom that boasts amenities like french doors, 16 foot ceilings, a chef's kitchen, and an expansive master suite with sitting area, fireplace and soaking tub for two. The home also includes Italian tiles, custom cabinetry and a professionally designed media, sound and lighting systems. Out back, there's a landscaped garden, deck and the requisite heated gunite pool.
For those interested in checking out this place for themselves, they're holding an open house this Sunday from noon - 2pm. If you make it out to the showing, let us know if it's as pretty in person as it is in pictures.
