It had been so long since we'd heard news of a fire round these parts that we had almost forgotten about the rash of them late last year. However, last night was a harsh reminder as it brought word of one that completely destroyed a house on Jordan Drive in Watermill and damaged a neighbor before it was extinguished shortly after 10pm.
Around 7pm, a nearby resident noticed a red glow emanating from the area. When firefighters from Southampton and North Sea arrived at the scene, they saw that the home was almost completely engulfed in flames. Several nearby departments?Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Flanders?were called in to assist with the blaze. At least one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
The 6,800 sq. ft. residence set on 1.5 acres has been on and off the market since July of 2007. The home's owner, Michael Polacco, has offered no comment at this time.
Southampton fire marshals are investigating. We'll make sure to keep you updated.
