Sylvester Manor

A historic Shelter Island estate is set to become part of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the newest addition to DC's best feature, the Smithsonian. Thousands of documents and artifacts from Sylvester Manor are currently being catalogued and analyzed as historians, archaeologists and scholars plan an exhibit called “Slavery and Freedom." Significant for being "the only intact 17th century plantation north of the Mason-Dixon Line," the manor will be featured in the museum's permanent display when its doors open in 2013.
