The Hamptons Is Being Invaded By British Music Festivals

New, 2 comments

The next two weekends are pretty major for people who like music for there are going to be two — count 'em — two festivals rolling into town. Both are being marketed as "European-style music festivals" (and both are being helmed by British people), so think Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza, but smaller and with more tea sandwiches. And for those that haven't already bought tickets and assembled baggies of gorp (among other substances), here are the details:

ESCAPE 2 NY
August 5th through 7th
Shinnecock Reservation, Southampton

Starting today, this fesvital is expected to draw up to 5,000 people each day and will feature acts like Patti Smith, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, and Of Montreal. There'll be vendors, art installations, and a "high-end culinary experience" (courtesy of the Lower East Side's Fat Raddish, which also is behind the kitchen at Ruschmeyer's in Montauk). That bunny spotted on the Hampton Luxury Liner during July 4th Weekend? He was part of an elaborate marketing campaign for this festival.

MTK FESTIVAL
August 13th and 14th
East Hampton Airport

This will be larger (they're expecting up to 9,000 people each day, much to the chagrin of those who live nearby) and slightly less whimsical than Escape 2 NY (Bing is a major corporate sponsor, so you know how that goes). Bands like Vampire Weekend, Bright Eyes, and Tame Impala will be taking the stage and there'll be a major retail component (more than 30 designers will create a high-end bazar of boutiques). Important to note: Hard liquor is only available to those who buy a VIP ticket (everyone else will have to stick to beer and wine).
