Curbed Cup 1st Round: (6) Water Mill vs. (3) Amagansett

The Curbed Cup, our annual award to the Hamptons neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 8 'hoods vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have one matchup per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends in the wee hours the next morning. Let the eliminations commence!

"Why do you think there's a traffic light in Water Mill? Only way to get people to stop there." While we laughed at this comment at the time, nothing could be further from the truth that is "The Mill" (no one calls it that). 2011 saw an influx of celebrity buyers, some wealthy residents opposing a sailing club, a $20M teardown and an inexplicable $3M price increase. And don't you dare forget about those cupcakes.

Ah...good old Amagansett (aka "I'm against it!"). After successfully banishing the MTK Festival to East Hampton, the hamlet seemed to experience just as much good news as it did bad. A fire destroyed Scoville Hall, but the firehouse went green. The Breaking Dawn soundtrack was written there, but it also laid claim to the title of "Best Mexican In The Hamptons". The East Hampton hamlet has had a tough year, but will sympathy be enough to win the cup? We'll know soon enough!
