Curbed Cup 1st Round: (1) Sag Harbor vs. (8) Shelter Island

The Curbed Cup, our annual award to the Hamptons neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 8 'hoods vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have one matchup per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends in the wee hours the next morning. Let the eliminations commence!

Last year's Curbed Cup winner, Sag Harbor, has done a great job maintaining its Hamptons appeal without falling victim to the chain stores and raucous restaurants (we're looking at you East Hampton and Montauk) that have plagued many other East End towns. 2011 also saw groundbreaking on the much delayed Bulova Condominiums, the sale of the Methodist Church and a flurry of end of the year buying activity.

As for Shelter Island, we learned that the same company responsible for the Bulova Condos has its sights set on The Chequit Inn, there are some pretty sweet vacation rentals and the island can be home to some pretty pricey real estate. Getting there may require a boat ride, but that's a small price to pay for truly getting away from it all.
