The East End's slow march towards sustainability continues. Shelter Island's Ace Hardware is the latest area business (and only the second in that zip code) to install a solar system hoping to offset rising energy costs. The total price tag for the project? About $60K, half of which was paid for via a LIPA rebate and tax breaks. Between those two incentives and their newly lowered electric bill, the store owners expect to recoup their investment within the next three years. With more and more examples of solar systems paying for themselves relatively quickly, we have a feeling that other area business will follow suit in the coming months. [Previously, SI Reporter]
