Area hunters will soon have the opportunity to catch their own bird for Thanksgiving. This Saturday, the five-day wild turkey hunting season begins on Long Island. While not as problematic as deer, the bird's population has swelled since being introduced to Long Island in the early 90s. The Department of Environmental Conservation began the hunt three years ago as a way help manage it. [Patch]
