Us vs. Them

While recent lawsuits might lead one to think that the issue of beach access is new to the East End, a recently published book from David Goddard reminds us that the fight is well over a century old. Mr. Goddard began writing "Colonizing Southampton" when he discovered a transcription of a trial involving a summer resident who claimed a beach?one that had been used by area fisherman for centuries?as his own. From there, he went on to discover a history of Southampton usually glossed over and wrote about the tension-filled the transition between fishing community and the emerging summer colony.
