When Alexander Zagoreos cut down four evergreen trees to make way for the installation of a septic system and driveway in a home he's building for his daughter on Shelter Island, he probably wasn't expecting quite such a reaction. According to one builder working on site, "Every single car brakes" as drivers notice the change. Supervisor Jim Dougherty even called the downing "terrible" when it was mentioned at a recent Town Board work session. Terrible, maybe, but not illegal according to the town's permits coordinator. Mr. Sagoreos noted he was sensitive to the environment?and perhaps the opinions of the Shelter Island community?and plans on planting new trees. [Shelter Island Reporter]
