Montauk Modern Wins AIA New York State Design Award

New, 2 comments

Bates Masi + Architects of Sag Harbor has earned an AIA NY State 2010 Award of Merit for its work on The Pryor Residence, a glossy modern home in the Hither Hills section of Montauk. Sited on 1.6 acres, the summer house was designed to feel like a "hilltop campsite"—one where "36-foot-long glass pocket doors" replace rickety tents. And even though most of the rooms are totally opened to the landscape, one of the first floor guest rooms has its own entrance, you know, "for added privacy." Moving on, the house's mode of construction is also pretty admirable: In an effort to "disturb the landscape as little as possible," the architects constructed parts of the house off-site, and then assembled the pieces on the property, Lincoln Log style. A respectable endeavor, indeed! Bates Masi + Architects also received an award for the Noyack Creek Residence, an equally modern home located in Southampton.
