As expected—and feared—yesterday was indeed the final day of business for the Fairway Restaurant at Sagaponack's Poxabogue Golf Course under the management of Daniel Murray, who's operated the lunchcounter since 1991. Though offered a lease renewal by the course's new-ish owners, Murray chaffed at new restrictions on the lease, such as the stipulation that he'd have to remain open for dinner. Per the Southampton Press, "A last-ditch personal appeal by members of the Southampton Town Board on Thursday failed to convince Poxabogue’s manager, Ed Wankel, to adjust the terms of the restaurant’s lease." Pour one out, please.
As has also been expected, though, the spot won't remain dark for long. Later this spring, the restaurant will re-open under the management of the owners of Mattituck's Love Lane Café. How this will impact the quality of the tuna melts and Arnold Palmers remains to be seen.
