Southampton Shinnecocks Spend Big To Win Long Island's Love

The Shinnecock Indians are ponying up some serious cash to get approval for their Long Island casino. Along with their partners-in-poker, the tribe has paid lobbyists more than $1 million to get their game on somewhere on the island. Does this mean the nightmare scenario of a Southampton casino is getting closer to reality? Odds are against it. Belmont Park still appears to be the frontrunner, since one of the Shins' big investors donated money to a couple of Nassau County politicians to keep things moving. "We're hoping to get quick resolution on a site location that's good for the state, good for the specific locality and the people there, and good for the tribe," said one casino lobbyist. Hopefully, it's all good for the Hamptons.
