A side effect of high rates of unemployment and a general economic catastrophe: No traffic! Apparently, there is a lot less bridge and tunnel crossing going on in these parts lately, and the MTA would like you to hit the L.I.E. While 837,537 cars went by a bridge or a tunnel every day in October 2007, only 799,890 ventured near one this past May. Not a huge change, until you hear that there were '3.7 million less crossings from the same time frame last year'. Somewhere, a Jitney driver's prayers have been answered. [NYP]
