The Southampton Press is reporting that a basking shark was spotted swimming among surfers off Ponquogue Beach in Hampton Bays on Sunday. A basking shark is 'a slow-moving variety of shark that is not known to attack humans', and is the second largest of all shark species. Hampton Bays was probably not the only stop for this creature's Sunday afternoon swim, as the Coast Guard responded to calls about a 'large fin' spotted in the water near Westhampton Dunes and police reported sightings as far as Rockaway Beach in Queens.
