WWI Bomb Scare

The Suffolk County Bomb Squad was called to a house in Quogue over the weekend after two fearless brothers approached an auctioneer with unexploded World War I artillery shell. The brothers Hoffman were preparing the contents of their late parents home for auction when they asked said auctioneer if the family heirloom could be sold, mentioning that they didn't know if the shell was live. (It wasn't, said the bomb squad.) The shell had been buried in the backyard of the Ocean Avenue home for decades, after the Hoffmans' father received it from a nurse during the war. [SH Press]
