Farmstand Liberation: Pike's is $900K Away From Freedom

With two months to go, the Peconic Land Trust is shouting from the rooftops for donations to help complete the purchase of Pike's Farmstand in Sagaponack. The Hopping Family, owners of the 7 acres on which Jim and Jennifer Pike have sold their crops for the last 25 years, have extended the contract period until the end of 2009. With a reduced price of $8.3 million, Peconic Land Trust president John Halsey has brought together $6.5 million from the county and Southampton Town, while working to raise another $1.8 million to complete the sale. Half of that is in the bank, with another $900,000 needed before year's end. An uncertain future has plagued the farmstand for years, since the Hoppings first listed the property for sale, sparking the interest of developers. All signs point to Pike's salvation, but the countdown has officially begun.
